Key electrical components in a residential AC
A typical system relies on several electrical parts working together: a capacitor that helps start and run the compressor and fan motors, a contactor that switches power to the outdoor unit on and off, low-voltage control wiring connecting the thermostat to the equipment, and a step-down transformer that supplies that low-voltage circuit.
Capacitors
Capacitors store and release electrical energy to help motors start and keep running smoothly. A weakening or failed capacitor is one of the more common reasons an outdoor unit hums but doesn't start, or a fan spins slowly. This is covered in more depth on our capacitor repair page.
Contactors
The contactor is essentially a switch that the thermostat signal closes to send full power to the outdoor unit. Contactors can develop pitted or burnt contacts over years of cycling, which can cause a unit to not start at all, or in rarer cases to keep running when it shouldn't.
Wiring and connections
Loose or corroded wiring connections — at the disconnect, the contactor, or inside the air handler — can cause intermittent operation, unusual noises, or a system that stops working after vibration loosens a connection over time. Rodent damage to wiring, while not unique to any one region, is also a possibility worth having a technician check if a wiring issue is suspected. Breakers and disconnects
The breaker protects the circuit from overload, and the outdoor disconnect is a manual shutoff, typically a small box near the condenser, used to cut power for service. A breaker that trips once might be an isolated event, but a breaker that trips repeatedly is a sign of a real electrical fault — a short, a failing motor drawing excess current, or another issue — and should not simply be reset over and over.
Transformers and control voltage
The transformer steps household voltage down to the roughly 24 volts used by thermostat and control wiring. A failing transformer can cause the thermostat to lose power entirely or behave erratically, even though the main electrical service to the home is fine.

- A humming outdoor unit that doesn't start
- A burning smell near the outdoor disconnect or indoor equipment
- The system randomly stopping and starting
- A thermostat that loses power intermittently
What a homeowner can safely check
- Confirm the breaker hasn't simply tripped once, and reset it a single time only if it hasn't already been repeatedly reset
- Leave the outdoor disconnect box and every electrical panel closed and untouched, and describe what you observed to the technician
- Note whether you smell anything burning, and if so, avoid running the system until it's checked
- Listen for a humming sound at the outdoor unit without opening it
- Note the exact timing of any breaker trips to describe to a technician

Any repeated breaker trip, burning smell, visible scorch marks, or a system that hums without starting warrants professional evaluation before further use. These are not homeowner-safe repairs, since they involve line-voltage electrical work at both the disconnect and inside the outdoor unit.

A technician tests capacitor capacitance, inspects and replaces worn contactors, checks wiring connections and insulation, verifies transformer output, and traces the source of any breaker trips using proper meters and lockout procedures before opening any panel.
